adi_notes – Leave notes for Textpattern users

This plugin provides:

  • a tab under Extensions, to set up adi_notes
  • new tabs under Content, Presentation and Admin to present your pearls of wisdom
  • public & private footnotes in all standard Textpattern admin pages

Installation

Installation of adi_notes adds a new table to your Textpattern database which should not interfere with anything else. That said, if you are of a cautious frame of mind then I can thoroughly recommend rss_admin_db_manager to do database backups before installation.

Once the plugin is installed and activated, go to the adi_notes tab under Extensions, select “Install” and click the “Do admin” button.

Upgrading from a pre-1.0 version of adi_notes

Due to a change in the adi_notes database table structure, when you upgrade from an early version of adi_notes you will be prompted to perform an “Upgrade” in the adi_notes admin tab.

Although a backup of your notes will be made during the upgrade process it is recommended that you make an independent copy.

Once you are happy with the new version of adi_notes, you can delete the backup by selecting the “Cleanup” option in the adi_notes admin tab.

adi_notes admin tab

Users with sufficient privileges will see the adi_notes admin tab, under Extensions. This provides functionality to:

  • Install
  • Uninstall
  • Switch note tab visibility on/off
  • Upgrade from an earlier version of adi_notes
  • Delete old backups taken during an upgrade
  • Change note styles

Tooltips are available here also – just hover over anything with a dashed underline.

Public & Private

Public notes are visible to all users but can only be added/edited by an Admin user (i.e. a user with sufficiently elevated privileges: Publisher/Manager/Designer).

Private notes can be added/edited by all users (including Admin) but are only visible to individual users.

Note tabs

Note tabs will appear under Content, Presentation or Admin depending to the visibility set in adi_notes admin. By default, the Content note is switched on automatically.

The Notes tabs are public, i.e. they will be visible to anyone who logs in to the Textpattern Admin interface.

Notes made under note tabs can only be edited by an Admin user.

Footnotes

Notes can be added to all of the standard Textpattern admin pages. They appear at the bottom of the page along with Add/Edit links.

All users see public footnotes. Private footnotes are only visible to individual users.

Only Admin users can add & edit public footnotes. All users can add & edit their own private footnotes.

Note: Footnotes are only available in TXP versions 4.0.6+

More notes about adi_notes

  • Uninstall will delete all notes from the Textpattern database.
  • Visibility simply controls whether the note tabs can be seen under the specified area tabs. Notes that are not visible are not deleted, just hidden. Footnotes are always visible, however they may be removed by deleting the note contents.
  • Attempts to make all note tabs invisible will be ignored.
  • The Edit links will only be seen by those sufficiently elevated in the privilege department.
  • Notes are formatted using Textile.
